Foundations: The Blood of Jesus Christ

This right here is my very first blog post, and honestly, I think this topic deserves to be first for a Christian lifestyle blog.  The blood of Jesus Christ.  How often have you heard as a Christian that Jesus died on the cross for your sins?  Perhaps that is what drew you to Christianity in the first place; the realization that God loved you so much that He sent His only son to die for your sins and the redemption of mankind.  The mere thought of it is enough to bring you to tears.  This is the single most important event in history and the single most important belief that sets us apart from any other person or religion.  You could argue that the entire Bible is a cohesive, integrated and powerful message of how passionately God loves us.  This is what I am discovering through my personal Bible study.  At the same time, I am discovering just how little thought and care I have given to this message as a proclaimed Christian.  What does it mean to be redeemed and born again through Jesus Christ?  How many times have we repeated this message to other people with lack of understanding and, God forbid, apathy?  Perhaps it is this ignorance that is keeping us from understanding and embracing the power of His sacrifice.  Let me ask you something: Do your previous sins haunt you?  As a Christian, are you struggling with leaving the past behind you and moving forward with Christ?  Trust me when I say that you are not the only one.  This is what this blog post is intended to address.

John 3:16-17 (KJV) says:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Ahh, yes.  The beginning of your faith starts here.  God loved you so much that He gave his only son so that you may be redeemed through Christ’s blood and have everlasting life.  Galatians 1:4 says, “Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world…”  He paid the price for your sins.  How many of them?  This is a no brainer, am I right?  All of them.  Right?  Do you truly believe that?  Does that actually resonate with you?  There was a time you probably did something you thought you would never do.  “Oh no…how could I sink this low?  Who even am I?”  How many times did you pass your mirror and look at yourself in disgust?  How many days did you avoid opening your Bible and praying because you were afraid to approach Him?  How low did you go?  Did you have an extra cupcake when you promised you would stop after one?  Did you open up your browser last night and watch pornography?  Did you take drugs?  Did you have an abortion?

Many Christians will tell you that they believe Christ died for all their sins, but accept the torment of reliving the sins of their past thinking that God can forgive them for everything, but THAT.  But let me suggest to you that believing the blood of Jesus Christ falls short of redeeming you from all sin is blasphemous and self-centered.  Why believe in Christ at all?  Who are you to doubt the power of the living God and downplay the sacrifice that He made on the cross for you?  Let me point a word out to you in John 3:16-17: the word is “everlasting”.  What does that mean?  According to the Blue Letter Bible it is expressed by the Greek word aiōnios meaning “without beginning and end, that which always has been and always will be”.  Ephesians 1:4 says, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love…”  Before the foundation of the world, He had you in mind.  Do you think you have surprised an omnipotent, omniscient God with your act of sin?  Knowing that man would fall, God had a plan of redemption for mankind.  Knowing that you would sin, Jesus died on the cross that you may be saved.  Hebrews 9:14 says, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”  Who are you helping by drowning in the memory of your past?  Certainly not the Kingdom of Heaven.  You are too focused on your dead works to do anything to serve the living God.

The work of Jesus Christ is a complete work.  The price has been paid.  Nothing you do can change that.  Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”  You cannot earn salvation through your works.  It is a gift from a merciful God.  1 John 4:19 says, “We love him, because he first loved us.”  Before you were even a thought in your mother’s mind, God loved you and Jesus died for ALL of your sins.  What other faith can boast of such a wonderful Creator?  Now that does not mean you go out and do whatever you want.  Do not test God’s mercy.  God has given you the power to choose life or death (Deuteronomy 30:19).  Choose life and blessings.  Live a life of obedience and show Him your love by offering a life of servitude to His kingdom.  Why would you choose anything else?

Let me wrap this up for you with one of My favorite verses so far.  Romans 8:38-39 says:

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, how far have you fallen?  Is it so far down that God’s mercy cannot reach you?  Are you in a place where the blood of Jesus cannot cover you?  Blasphemy.  Remember that you have a real enemy that seeks to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10).  How much time has he stolen from you by keeping you in your past?  How much more could you have done for the Kingdom of God?  Revelation 3:20 says, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”  How long will you keep God waiting at the door?  Heaven forbid you keep Him waiting for something for which He already paid the price.
